MARTIN GRIFFITHS
Towards Landscapes of Innocence
1992 - 1995
The strict disciplines of figurative landscape gave way to imaginative renderings of nature developed freely from memory. In this body of small gouache works, single viewpoint perspective was abandoned so that a more intimate and emotive experience of nature could be brought directly onto the picture plane. Modesty, capriciousness and affection for nature - these were qualities which seemed to come through in paintings which arose from an awakening of wonder, the discovery of sensations of innocence.
