Experiencing Light

2003 - 2008

Each phase until now has occupied a movement of creatively drawing back or expanding out, and formed a vacillating progression towards the resolution of the current light sculptures. In these most recent works, means and inspiration have become one. Rather than signifying experience, they are experience. Rather than standing separately from nature, they merge into nature. Rather than representing light, the light of nature flows through them.

The harmony of opposites experienced in these works is not only real but active. The stainless steel pieces absorb and radiate light, 'taking in and giving out' and change with the hours of the day.

While the form of the work negates itself and is inclined to disappear into nature, the central light predominates over both sculpture and its surroundings. It creates a core experience at the heart of the work and becomes both an extension of nature - since its source is the sun - and a disjoined culmination. In this way, light emerges from nature and also stands free as a pure object of contemplation.

By concentrating the attention, these works aim to be a channel between the 'individual' and the 'universal'. Within their radiant changing light there is a vibrant equilibrium that is continously linked to the life of the universe and may give the viewer an experience of connecting with the unseen 'flow' and harmony of the universe. Experiencing the universal harmony - through a direct connection - is the constant aspiration behind these works.

Light is the most defining and transforming sensation.

Light is our desire.
