MARTIN GRIFFITHS
Energy and Peace
1997 - 2001
The works in this phase attempt to harmonise with the 'process of expression' ocurring naturally in our universe - the 'vibrations of music' which, on the level of sensations, come to us from all angles and travel out to meet us (the cello-like vibrato of certain clouds, the percussive intensity of evening light blazing across the sea). These oil paintings, with configurations of small squares superimposed over broader figures, try to give an abstract equivalent - a sense of something arriving. From darkness to light. They may simultaneously direct a person's attention inwards towards their own being, and give a sense of the universe expanding out away from them. It was extraodinary to discover that when the foreground and background figures harmonise, a feeling of energy and peace seems to emerge between the two. Towards the end of this outwardly expanding phase, a series of works gave abstract intimations of the cosmos: circular movements of tiny shapes of light on dark grounds.
