MARTIN GRIFFITHS
Creative Meditations
1995 - 1997
The light playfulness of the gouache paintings led to a more deeply rooted enquiry in works which came from meditation. They explored the journeys of colours drawn from the medieval location within geometric rhythms which were intended to evoke a ‘resonance of place’, and to present the life of the subject beyond human perception. There is no viewpoint in these oil paintings, but freedom to imaginatively 'range round' the subject - an experience of merging into rhythms and resonances of colour. It seemed important to achieve harmony between visually discordant elements previously drawn 'objectively' - to achieve a 'harmony of equality'.
